Ms. Giordano (Ms. G) lives for cultivating the potential of our special needs students! She was born in England to a military family and subsequently moved a lot as a child. Eventually, they settled in Southern California where she spent 20+ years working with the Blind Children's Center, Jr. Blind Foundation and 5 Acres Home for Children. She received her Bachelors Degree from the University of Southern California (USC) and holds two Masters Degrees- Special Education (GCU) and an MBA in Entrepreneurship (Pepperdine). She holds a certificate in Special Education and a Financial Literature Endorsement.

Her family enjoys many outdoor adventures together including zip-lining, paragliding, long bike rides, camping and hiking. Her youngest is 15 and she dreads becoming an empty nester. Her most recent accomplishment is a 54 mile bike ride through Bryce Canyon National Park. Her favorite treats are dark chocolate with almonds, lemon or pineapple Larabars and just about every fruit (minus guavas). My Email: shandee.goulding@washk12.org

I grew up in Southern California and spent nine years substitute teaching while raising my children before beginning my full-time teaching career. After teaching 6th and 8th grade science in Texas for six and a half years, I joined the team at Dixie Intermediate, where I have now been teaching 7th grade science for the past six years.

Holding a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction, I pride myself on creating lessons that are clear, engaging, fun, and meaningful.

When I’m not teaching science, you’ll often find me playing the piano, organ, or drums or working on a creative project. I love crafting with cardboard, resin, clay, and other art materials, as well as organizing, making costumes, and planning parties. Halloween is my favorite holiday, and if there’s pizza, a Diet Dr. Pepper, or a Dairy Queen Blizzard with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups involved, I’m a happy camper!

Kembry Hafen | Language Arts 7, Utah History

My Email: kembry.hafen@washk12.org

I was born and raised in St. George and have a true passion for literacy. That passion was fostered early in my life as I grew to love reading and writing, despite struggling with both in elementary school. It continued to grow as I studied English and tutored students in literacy throughout my college career. I genuinely love to read, write, and discuss ideas, but that wasn't always true for me. It wasn't until intermediate school that I discovered that joy, and I hope to help my students discover it too. I also love the place we call home and am excited to share that appreciation with students in our Utah Studies class.

My family knows me as something of a hobby collector because I love trying new things! Whether I'm sewing, hiking, woodcarving, knitting, drawing, crocheting, or picking up a brand-new skill, I'm always eager to learn. I bring that same enthusiasm into the classroom by creating opportunities for students to explore, discover, and try new things alongside me.

Mrs. He’s love for language and culture started back home in China, where she grew up surrounded by stories, traditions, and curiosity. During college, she followed her passion for both words and creativity—earning a degree in Translation in China and spending time in the UK to explore her interest in fashion.

Her journey brought her to the U.S., where she completed her Master’s in Chinese at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Since then, she has been teaching in Chinese immersion programs across Massachusetts, Minnesota, and now sunny Utah—always working to make learning fun, meaningful, and inspiring for her students.

Outside the classroom, Mrs. He met her husband in Minnesota, where he was working on his PhD. He’s now a display engineer, and together they share their life with their spoiled eldest “dog child,” Nini, and their well-behaved middle “cat child,” Didi.

My Email: darian.leyva@washk12.org

Ms. Leyva has had a passion and drive for education since her time living in northern Utah. She knew in high school she wanted to teach. Pursuing this passion she went to Utah Tech University to get a Bachelors of Science in Theatre Education. She is the first in her family to attend and graduate college with a bachelor's degree.

Over the past four years Ms. Leyva dove into her school work and being a part of the theatre world gaining experience in acting, designing and management. Her goal was to learn an array of skills so she could be prepared to pass the passion of theatre down to her students. In this time her love for teaching only grew.

During two summers Ms. Leyva lived in Bethesda Maryland, about 30 minutes outside of Washington D.C., working on the Walter Reed Medical Base at their Child Development Center. Here she worked with ages six weeks old to six years old. This experience was an amazing opportunity in many ways. She was able to travel the farthest she had ever been as well as learn about working with young children.

At the start of her final year in college Ms. Leyva would have told you her dream was to work in a high school. Then after completing her student teaching experience with an intermediate school she realized this age group is where her passions lie. She is excited to lay the foundations for students and help them build so many skills to help them throughout-life even if they do not continue with theatre.

Mrs. Whitehead has been teaching Language Arts 6 at DIS since 2017. She loves helping students become confident readers, writers, and critical thinkers. The best part of teaching sixth grade? Her students keep her laughing, thinking, and feeling young every day.

Her childhood was spent in Lodi, California, where her mornings often began with the shake of crop dusters flying over the grape vineyards that surrounded her farm home. She spent her summers reading in a hammock and enjoying every fruit imaginable from her family’s large orchard. She remembers that the first book to make her cry was Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls.

Utah has been home for the past 30 years, where she and her husband have raised five children and are now the proud grandparents of 22 active grandchildren. For 44 summers, they have made unforgettable memories houseboating at Lake Powell.

I fell in love with history back in the third grade—shout out to Mrs. Romano, Mrs. Gardener, Coach Jorgensen, Mr. Barnes, and Mr. Browning for sparking that interest! I’ve always believed that the more we study history, the better we understand the world today, since so much of it has been shaped by critical events, decisions, and cultures of the past. To be the best history teacher I can be, I truly believe I need to travel. There's something powerful about standing in the places where history happened—it brings the stories to life in a way no textbook can. Thankfully, my husband supports this belief, and together we’ve explored a variety of places. Whether near or far, every destination has taught me something meaningful about the land and the people who live there. At Dixie Intermediate, I hope to pass that curiosity and excitement on to my students, helping them see just how connected they are to the people and stories that came before them.
